STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It’s almost time for the biggest shopping day of the holiday season — Black Friday — and some retailers will offer better deals than others this year, according to experts.
As Black Friday sales have started earlier this year, and most consumers plan to shop online instead of in-store, the personal finance website WalletHub released a report, 2021′s Best Places to Shop on Black Friday. It surveyed nearly 5,000 deals from 21 of the biggest United States retailers’ 2021 Black Friday ad scans to find the stores offering the biggest discounts on various product categories like appliances, jewelry and toys.
The overall average discount for Black Friday is 32%, according to WalletHub. Consumers should aim for this discount amount or higher if they want to get a good deal this year.
The apparel and accessories category has some of the biggest shares of discounted items — representing 18.4% if all offers, while the consumer packaged goods category has the smallest at 3.47%.
According to the report, Macy’s has the highest overall discount rate at 58.51%, while Ace Hardware has the lowest at 11.73%.

So how can you find the best deals on Black Friday?
Dr. John L. Stanton, chairman and professor of food marketing at Saint Joseph’s University, said the best place to search for discounts is from home.
“While others are scrambling between stores looking for bargains, you can be sitting in your pajamas doing virtually the same thing,” he said. “To paraphrase an old adage — ‘Let your fingers do the shopping.’ I recommend making a list of what you are looking for or want; search a variety of sites and do not just search the ‘go-to’ sites like Amazon.”
Another tip for maximizing bargains on Black Friday is to look for e-commerce websites and credit card companies that give cash back for purchases that consumers make through their website, according to Dr. Byoungho “Ellie” Jin, president of the International Textile and Apparel Association.
“This is an additional discount on top of bargains on Black Friday,” she added. “Another tip includes signing up for emails for additional discounts (typically 10-20% for the first purchase). This will help a lot, especially for big-ticket items.”
